Jamaat postpones Tuesday’s rally to avoid confrontation

Shawdesh Desk:

Jamaat-e-Islami in a press briefing on Tuesday suspended its rally scheduled for the same day to avoid confrontation.

The party also announced that they would hold their rally on Friday, August 4.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police authorities earlier said that they did not permit Jamaat to hold a rally in the capital since there was a risk of the law and order situation deteriorating.

Jamaat held the press briefing on Tuesday morning.

Nurul Islam Bulbul, ameer of Jamaat’s Dhaka city south unit, made the announcement through live streamed in social media about postponing the rally.

The party did not disclose the venue of the press conference.

The leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami said they were hopeful that police would support them and give them permission for Friday’s rally demanding a free and fair election under the caretaker government.

On July 24, Jamaat announced that it would hold a rally at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque to press home its demands.

On the following day, a Jamaat delegation visited Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters, seeking permission to hold the rally.

But police said Jamaat would not be given permission for the rally as they had intelligence report that subversive activities might be carried out centring the rally.

The June 10 rally, attended by several thousand Jamaat followers, was the party’s first public rally in the capital in a decade.
